On February 16 the US Navy announced a new competition to supply a presidential helicopter fleet. The programme replaces the Lockheed Martin/AgustaWestland VH-71, which was cancelled in May 2009 after excessive cost overruns made its politically unacceptable. The Presidential Vertical Lift Platform (VXX) called for interested parties to register interest by March 3 in supplying a replacement for the Sikorsky VH-3Ds and VH-60Ns operated by Marine Helicopter Squadron 1 (HMX-1).
