The Myanmar Air Force has contracted for 62 new helicopters from Russia, comprising of 50 Mil Mi-24 Hinds and 12 Mi-2 Hoplites. Although few details of the sale have been revealed, the helicopters are believed to be from surplus Russian stocks, as the Mi-2 is no longer in production. The helicopters are reportedly being assembled at the flying training base at Meikthila and will be issued to four squadrons based at Magwe and ELa Air Bases. They will be used in the counter-insurgency role.
