On October 28 Russia tested the operational capability of its strategic missiles by launching three inter-continental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) from land and naval platforms. A single-warhead RS-12M Topol missile was launched from the Plesetsk space centre in northern Russia and hit the designated target on the Kura test range in the country's Kamchatka peninsula 20 minutes later. The 6,200-mile range (10,000-km) Topol, capable of carrying a 550 kiloton nuclear warhead, was in active service from 1987 to 2007 with the 54th Strategic Missile Division deployed near the town of Teikovo in the Ivanovo region, about 148 miles (240 km) northeast of Moscow. The test-launch enables Russia to extend the service life of the Topol to 23 years from the ten originally planned.
