On October 20 Sikorsky announced that it will fund and build two light tactical helicopter prototypes based on its Sikorsky X2 technology demonstrator. Known as the S-97 Raider X2, the aircraft are due to fly before the US Army releases its request for proposals for the Armed Aerial Scout (AAS) programme, which is expected in 2014. The company submitted an X2-based proposal for the AAS's request for information in March (see Armed Aerial Scout Proposals Outlined, June, pl8). Sikorsky is currently putting together a team of suppliers, a process expected to be completed within two to three months, while the preliminary design review is expected to be completed in 2011 and the first flight within 40 to 50 months time. The Raider X2s will prove the military applications of the demonstrator's co-axial rotor and pusher propeller design, and will be powered by a pair of General Electric T700s.
