The Vazduhoplovstvo i protiwazduhop-lovna odbrana (ViPVO, Serbian Air Force) is about to take delivery of two Mil Mi-17 Hip-Hs previously operated by the Ministry of Interior's infamous Jedinica za specijalne operacije (JSO, Special Operations Unit). The helicopters are the first additions to the ViPVO's inventory in nearly two decades (further to More Hips far Serbian Air Force, October, p8). Two Hips, alongside two Mi-24V Hinds, were purchased from an undisclosed seller (possibly Ukraine, Azerbaijan or Tajikistan) in 1997 and 1998 to support JSO and police operations in Kosovo. Shortly after the conflict in Kosovo ended they were grounded as unserviceable and the JSO disbanded. They were handed over to the Ministry of Defence and four years ago it was decided to overhaul and return them to service to supplement the ViPVO transport helicopter fleet, which currently comprises a handful of Mi-8T Hip-Cs.
