Questions were asked in the UK Parliament after British Airways (BA) announced its decision to replace its short-haul fleet with Boeing 757s rather than the rival Airbus A310 back in 1978. Back then some observers in the industry, as well as many MPs, felt that the UK's national airline should have bought aircraft closer to home but, despite the early controversy, BA stuck with its decision and took delivery of its first example in late January 1983. Replacing the airline's ageing and comparatively fuel-thirsty Hawker-Siddeley Trident fleet, the new Boeing came with a state-of-the-art flight management computer (FMC) that made the Trident's flight engineer's position redundant.
