The carrier's story began on February 1,1934, when the South African Government bought Union Airways and renamed it South African Airways. Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg were served initially and the following yearthe airline acquired South-West African Airways, which had been providing a weekly air-mail service between Windhoek and Kimberley since 1932. SAA subsequently entered the international market on June 9, 1937, its first such service being Johannesburg-Pietersburg-Bulawayo (Zimbabwe)-Livingstone-Lusaka (both in Zambia). During this time its main equipment was the Junkers Ju-52, though it also operated Junkers Ju-86s, which served from 1937 onwards, and four Airspeed Envoy light twins. World War Two had led to the suspension of services butthese were resumed on December 1,1944, with six de-mobilised Lockheed Lodestars flying priority passengers betweenthe main cities of the Union. The so-called Springbok service to London was launched in November 1945 with Avro Yorks, which routed via Nairobi, and took two days.
