Operated by 5 (Army Co-operation) Squadron, the Airborne Stand-Off Radar (ASTOR) system officially entered service with the Royal Air Force on December 1. It consists of the Raytheon Sentinel R.1 and ground stations to provide an all-weather intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) capability for commanders on the ground. The ASTOR's in-service date has been defined by the Ministry of Defence as the acceptance into service of (at least) two Sentinel R.1, two Tactical Ground Stations (TGS) and two trained crews capable of supporting a brigade-level deployment. By December 1, four of the five Sentinels had been delivered to 5 (AC) Squadron, while the fifth is already at RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire, and will be handed over by Raytheon before the end of 2008. Six TGS and two Operational Level Ground Stations (OLGS) have also been delivered.
