Building on the success of the Tucano, Embraer designed the Super Tucano to meet US and Brazilian requirements. David Willis looks at the long gestation of the aircraft and its success in the light strike and training markets. Embraer originally designed the EMB-312 Tucano (the Brazilian word for toucan) as a trainer. However, many of the nations that bought them used them as light strike aircraft, armed with podded guns, rockets or free-fall bombs. The Tucano soon gained a formidable reputation for its role in the narcotics war in Latin America, intercepting aircraft of suspected drug smugglers and attacking guerrilla camps in the forests of Colombia and Peru. Its role of suppressing Iraqi's dissidents in the hands of the former regime received less publicity.
