When Boeing decided it wanted to offer a next-generation airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft it couldn't have anticipated the challenges it would face. By opting to abandon the traditional rotating antenna for the fixed Northrop Grumman Multi-role Electronically Scanned Array (MESA) radar it has been beset by problems in getting this new technology to meet the required level of performance. Egan Greenstein, Manager for Business Development of AEW&C explained: "The main issue was with the radar system in that when we began the programme it was not as mature as we would have hoped.
