Antonov's huge An-124 was designed for use by the Soviet military. However, in the post Cold War world, the aircraft has proved a money-spinner for a number of cargo operators, as William F Me 11 berg outlines. IT was the 14th-century English poet Geoffrey Chaucer who coined the familiar adage: "Mighty oaks from tiny acorns grow". Six centuries later, Russian aircraft designer Oleg Antonov proved the point. In 1977, the Soviet Government chose his design bureau to build the world's biggest aircraft - a huge cargo-lifter intended to carry both military and civilian payloads. It was quite an assignment for a man who had started his 50-year aviation career designing gliders.
