In 2006, the Vickers VC10 celebrated 40 years of RAF service. Today, it forms the core of both the air transport and air-to-air refuelling fleets, flying missions that are vital to the ability of the United Kingdom to effectively project force and sustain operations beyond its own shores. RAF procurement of the VC10 was triggered by Air Staff Requirement (ASR) 239, which called for a new strategic transport. An order was placed in September 1961 for the VC10 C.1, a version that combined the standard-length airframe and the wings and engines of the Super VC10 with a large port side freight door and a strengthened cabin floor. The first aircraft was delivered for flight testing on November 26, 1965, and by August 1968 all 14 had been handed over to 10 Squadron based at RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire. On November 11, 1968, each aircraft in the fleet was named after individuals that had been awarded the Victoria Cross medal.
