On June 11 the first short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) Lockheed Martin F-35B Lighting II (BF-1) made its inaugural flight from Fort Worth, Texas, with test pilot Graham Tomlinson atthe controls. Tomlinson, a former RAF Harrier pilot now working for EAE Systems, an industrial partner in the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme, lifted off the runway at 1017hrs for a series of handling tests, engine power variations and subsystems checks. He took the aircraft up to 15,000ft (4,572m) before carrying out a conventional landing at 1101hrs.
