IN June 2004 the US Navy announced its selection of the Boeing submission for its Multi-role Maritime Aircraft (MMA) requirement and awarded the firm a System Development and Demonstration (SDD) contract valued at $3.89 billion (approx ￡1.9 billion). The airframe is based on the fuselage of the successful Boeing 737-800 and the wings of the 737-900 in order to minimise development time and cost, utilising the lean manufacturing skills developed for the commercial aircraft. Rather than produce 'green' airframes that will be taken to another location to be fitted out with military equipment, Boeing intends to assemble them on a new production line at Renlon, Washington alongside commercial 737s, using a labour force that is capable of working on both types. The mission systems, including more than 100 antennae per airframe, will be installed on the line as part of the assembly process. The P-8A designation and the name Poseidon, after the Greek God of the Sea, were announced in 2005 when the Navy's preliminary design review described the project as the best major weapons system it had ever evaluated.
