Low cost transatlantic carrier Zoom Airlines cancelled all flights and advised its passengers to seek alternative arrangements on August 28 when it went into administration. All its 450 employees in Canada and 260 in the United Kingdom will lose their jobs unless a buyer can be found in the short term. The airline was forced into administration when British Airports Authority grounded one of its flights at Glasgow Airport on August 27 for non-payment of fees, an action repeated by other airport operators. Meanwhile aircraft lessor ILFC moved to terminate its contracts with the carrier and to repossess its aircraft. Zoom operated from five airports in the United Kingdom and flew to seven destinations in Canada, and to Bermuda; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; New York; San Diego; California; Paris and Rome. It attributed its plight to the rising cost of fuel, which added $50 million (￡28 million) to its operating costs in the last year, and to the prevailing economic conditions.
