Designed by Ilyushin in the Russian Federation and manufactured by the Voronezh Aircraft Production Association (VASO) in Voronezh, the Ilyushin Il-96 is a four-engined, long-haul widebody airliner. Developed during the 1980s as a successor to the Ilyushin Il-86, it was radically re-designed to offer longer range. The resulting aircraft has a shorter fuselage together with supercritical wings, winglets, a new tail, and it incorporates composite components, including flaps and main deck floors. The aircraft is fitted with fly-by-wire control systems together with six multi-function colour glass cockpit avionic displays, incorporating satellite navigation and a traffic collision avoidance system. The 11-96 made its first flight on September 28, 1988 and entered into service with Aeroflot in 1993 after achieving Russian certification on December 29, 1992.
