Alenia north America announced on September 30 that it had been awarded a $287 million (￡165 million) contract by the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center (WR-ALC) based at Robins AFB, Georgia, for 18 refurbished Alenia G.222s. The former Aeronautica Militare Italiana (Italian Air Force) aircraft were traded in to Alenia in part exchange for its new C-27Js and will be refurbished at the company's Naples facility before being handed over by the US Air Force Combined Air Power Transition Force to the Afghanistan National Army Air Corps (ANAAC). Deliveries will take place from September 2009 until late 2011. Two will be handed over in September 2009, followed by one every three months until all are in service. While all 18 will be configured as standard transports, equipment to convert two for the VIP transport role will also be supplied to the ANAAC. Spares, support equipment and contractor logistics support for three years is also included in the deal.
