The Vickers Vanguard grew out of a requirement first raised by British European Airways (BEA) in 1953 which called for an airliner faster and with 10% greater economy than the Viscount 806 due for delivery in 1957. Trans-Canada Airlines (TCA), another major Viscount customer, was also interested in this broad specification and Vickers' design teams began to examine options.
