AFTER MORE than eight years in development, China's newest wind tunnel, FL-62, was tested successfully and received data for an undisclosed in-development aircraft for the first time on May 26. According to the Aerodynamics Research Institute, part of the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the flow field generated by the wind tunnel was stable, with test data for the aircraft gathered successfully. It added that FL-62 was now ready to test all types of aircraft designs. The 6,006-tonne (6,620-ton), 17,000m~3 wind tunnel was approved for construction in 2012 and is based at Shenyang in China's Liaoning province. It is the nation's first large continuous transonic wind tunnel and will be used to assist the development of future Chinese warplanes, such as the Shenyang Aircraft Design and Research Institute's planned sixth-generation fighter, expected to enter service in 2035.
