INDIA HAS become the latest country to place an order for the Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk, after signing a contract with the US Navy for 24 examples. In mid-May the US Naval Air Systems Command awarded a US$905m firm fixed price, cost-plus fixed-fee contract to Lockheed Martin. It followed provisional approval of the Indian Navy's acquisition of the type by its defence ministry back in February. Under the new deal, India will receive 21 MH-60Rs with the remaining three going to the US Navy. The contract will be handled by the US Navy via the Foreign Military Sales process, with the first delivery anticipated next spring.The helicopters will replace the Indian Navy's ageing fleet of Sea Kings that have served since 1971.
