The llyushin 11-38 is the principal anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and maritime patrol workhorse of the MA VMF - the Naval Aviation of the Russian Federation. It is designed for operations in the so-called 'medium-range' oceanic zone, up to 1,187nm (2,200km) from its base, where it can patrol for up to four hours. The May- its NATO reporting name - went into service in March 1968 and the surviving examples, built between 1967 and 1972, are now grouped into three frontline ASW squadrons. One of them is assigned to the Northern Fleet, with two more working with the Pacific Fleet's aviation service. Despite upgrades, the service faces the challenge of operating an aged maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare fleet, without any clear prospects for development and procurement of all-new aircraft anytime soon. So, the MA VMF will remain reliant on a motley selection of non-upgraded ll-38s and upgraded II-38NS (a total fleet of about 20 active aircraft - with an average age of more than 50 years!) for the best part of a decade.
