January 8 marked the end of an era when Northwest Airlines retired its last DC-10. Geoff Jones looks back over 34 successful years of tri-jet operations with the US carrier. Northwest Airlines' last Douglas DC-10 commercial passenger service touched down at 0539hrs local time at Minneapolis/St Paul International Airport, Minnesota on January 8. The retirement by Northwest of the 'Big Doug', the last airliner to be built by the famous Douglas company (before it became McDonnell Douglas and then Boeing) is the end of an era, as it was the last 'mainstream' airline to operate the famous wide-body tri-jet. It is also a milestone in the transformation of the carrier's fleet with the type being replaced by Airbus A330s.
