Without doubt, today's US Air Force (USAF) is the world's most powerful air arm. Tasked with providing the United States with the full spectrum of air operations, from air defence of the homeland, force projection overseas, collection of intelligence on potential adversaries, to maintenance of two arms of the strategic deterrent, it operates some of the most advanced aircraft and space vehicles. While the need to maintain large standing forces to counter a full-scale war has disappeared, the service has concentrated on being able to fight two smaller regional conflicts simultaneously, having invested in restructuring and re-equipping to be able to deploy in force quickly and decisively.rnAlthough formed as a separate service on September 26, 1947, the US Air Force can trace its lineage back to August 1, 1907, the date the Aeronautical Division of the Signal Corps was formed. Independence from Army control saw the establishment of commands dedicated to air defence, strategic and tactical warfare, transport, training and other tasks, as well as maintaining significant forces in Europe and the Far East. Over the years, it has participated in many operations and conflicts, significantly the Berlin Airlift in 1948, the Korean War, the campaign over southeast Asia in the 1960s and into the 1970s, and the prolonged confrontation between the east and west known as the Cold War.
