Approval was granted at a meeting of the Thai Cabinet on October 16 to provide 34.4 billion bant ($1,086 billion) in funding for a Defence Ministry proposal to purchase 12 Saab JAS 39C/D Gripen fighters and two Saab Erieye airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft. The Gripen will replace the Royal Thai Air Force's (RTAF's) ageing F-5B/E fleet, which has been in service for over 30 years. This confirms plans announced in July, when initial approval had been granted for the Gripen proposal.
