GENERAL ATOMICS Aeronautical Systems Inc (GA-ASI) has achieved numerous advances in the capabilities of its MQ-9 and Avenger series of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). On January 22, the company announced successful completion of flight testing of a newly developed self-protection pod on the MQ-9 (see UAV Focus, p14). On the previous day, GA-ASI revealed that the Japan Coast Guard had conducted flight tests of Raytheon Intelligence and Space's SeaVue Expanded Mission Capability (XMC) radar and AN/DAS-4 Multi-spectral Targeting System. The trials were conducted between October 15 and November 10 last year in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, Japan.
