A BRITTEN-Norman Islander will be used to research the utility of hydrogen fuel cells for commercial aircraft in Project Fresson, a consortium led by Cranfield Aerospace Solutions. According to Britten-Norman, the project will "exploit recent advances in hydrogen fuel cell technology to develop a commercially viable, retrofit powertrain solution" for existing aircraft. The consortium includes Ricardo UK, which brings expertise in fuel cell systems, and Innovatus Technologies' ultralightweight tank design that uses patented cellular core composite techniques.
