Terrorist attacks on the United States in September 2001 led to an air travel downturn which resulted in hundreds of airliners being withdrawn from service and placed in storage. These not only included older, fuel-thirsty airliners such as the Boeing 727 and Douglas DC-9, but relatively economical aircraft such as the Fokker 100.
