In 1945 the British Admiralty wrote a series of technically complex Operational Requirements for strike aircraft with increasingly sophisticated anti-submarine capabilities. The last of these was G.R. 17/45, which specified a dedicated anti-submarine aircraft incorporating the lessons of wartime experience. Fairey made use of its extensive knowledge of naval aviation to meet the requirement and forwarded three submissions, of which the Type Q, the one accepted, was the most radical. After a study of alternative powerplants, Armstrong Siddeley was requested to couple two of its new ASM 3 Mamba turboprops through a common gearbox to drive independent, contra-rotating, four-bladed propellers. The company accepted the idea enthusiastically and began development work in December 1945 on what was to become the ASMD 1 Double Mamba, giving 2,950hp (2,200kW). Fairey's design team was led by H E Chaplin, assisted by D L Hollis, chief engineer, and so confident was Armstrong Siddeley in the design that it invested £539,500 of its own money in the submission process. The Type Q was the first aircraft for the Royal Navy (RN) designed specifically for the anti-submarine role.
