Embraer (the shortened title for Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA) launched its second family of regional jetliners at the Paris Air Show seven years ago. Since then other manufacturers have been forced to bow out of this market while some, notably Sukhoi Civil Aircraft and China Aviation Industry I (AVIC I), are struggling to get a foothold. Meanwhile, the Brazilian company has made good progress with the Embraer 170, 175 and 190 regional jets having been certified and the 195 to follow in the second quarter of this year. By the end of March 2006 it had delivered 137 of what the company now calls its E-jet models and had a firm backlog for 315 of these aircraft, with another 442 on option. It is clear that the success of Embraer's 170/190 family is a tribute to Brazilian determination and to the considerable talents of the Embraer staff.
