As US naval aviation approaches its centenary in 2010, it dominates the world's oceans and the skies above them, having come a long way from the fragile flying boats it operated in the beginning. As one of the world's most powerful air arms, it provides the United States with the means to control the seas and the littorals and to project power deep into the interiors of continents. To accomplish this, the Navy and Marine Corps operate approximately 3,800 aircraft. Operation Enduring Freedom, in which the US responded to the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, by striking at al Qaeda and Taliban forces inside Afghanistan, began on October 7, 2001, and marked the longest-range strikes ever conducted by carrier-based aircraft. The air campaign enabled US forces to invade Afghanistan through Pakistan from amphibious ships in the Arabian Sea and to quickly establish an enduring presence on the ground.
