Visitors to ParcAberporth's third unmanned systems open day witnessed the unusual sight of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) sharing airspace and runway with manned fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. Held at West Wales Airport on July 7, the event attracted some 500 guests (including visitors from France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the USA) and more than 20 exhibitors. Having committed £17 million to the airfield and building infrastructure, the Welsh Assembly Government achieved a major milestone in its plan to develop ParcAberporth as a UAV centre of excellence with the announcement by Selex Sensors and Airborne Systems that it is to become its first major corporate tenant. Selex S&AS, a Finmeccanica company - formed by Selex in the UK and Galileo Avionica in Italy-plans to operate two Galileo Avionica Falco UAVs from ParcAberporth as flying test-beds, primarily for payload development.
