Combined Air Operations Centres (CAOCs) have been crucial to the success of recent US and NATO air campaigns. Staffed by highly-experienced personnel, they are at the heart of planning, tasking and monitoring the effects of an air campaign. The US-run CAOC at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, for example, directs and co-ordinates sorties over Iraq and Afghanistan. The Joint Forces Commander tells the CAOC what they want to achieve on the battlefield and CAOC personnel then work out how best to match aircraft and weapons to meet those goals. They then produce an Air Tasking Order (ATO), which gives aircrew the information needed to fulfil their mission, such as take-off time, target coordinates and the weapons to be used.
