The end is near for Canada's CT-133 Silver Stars, soon to retire after more than 50 years service. Stefan DeGraef and Edwin Borremans report on the type's last posting and on the important work undertaken by these aircraft. Current plans are for the last military Canadair CT-133 Silver Star (the Canadian-built version of Lockheed's T-33 Shooting Star, better known by its nickname of 'T-Bird') to be retired on March 31, 2005, at Cold Lake air base, Alberta, when the type is withdrawn from Canadian Forces' service. The last aircraft to fly is scheduled to be the specially-marked 133452, destined to go on display at the base. The last unit to operate the Canadair CT-133 was the CFB Cold Lake-based Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment (AETE), Canada's Flight Test Centre, which used four aircraft for training and test purposes, including the live testing oi ejection seats and personal flight safety equipment. Surprisingly, the ultimate decision to withdraw the still-very-capable AETE CT-133s was not triggered by technical, maintenance or performance-related considerations, but was caused by the Canadian Department of National Defence's continual cost-cutting reforms and budget re-allocations, especially in the development of unmanned air vehicles.
