Sir - There is speculation in the USA that the Pentagon is planning defence cuts that will lead to reductions in operational force levels. USS John F Kennedy has been named as one of the potential cuts, despite having a notional eleven to 15 years of potential hull life remaining. Surely this is a wonderful opportunity for the UK? The US Navy offered carriers to Britain at bargain prices in 1961, 1963 and 1982 but the offer was not taken up. The Royal Navy 'borrowed' about 40 carriers from the US Navy during World War Two, all of which operated with success.
