In an industry constantly racked by strife, one airline is rapidly becoming the benchmark by which all others are judged, both in terms of product quality and in profitability. That airline is Emirates. Despite the air transport industry's many problems during the past half-decade, Emirates recently logged a 17th consecutive year of profit from its relatively short 20-year life. That it should be based in the heart of the turbulent Middle East has, in an ironic way, actually worked for, rather than against, it - Emirates' hub, Dubai, is also ideally located geographically as a potential world hub. From Dubai, it takes just six to seven hours to reach Europe, eight to east Asia, while even distant Australia and North America are just 13 or so hours away by non-stop flight. In recent years, Emirates has also profited greatly from being one of the very few 'credible' carriers to serve the Middle East out of Europe and Asia. So successfully has Dubai has been physically developed and aggressively marketed as a hub that its regional services are now generally considered the most convenient, seamless (and safest) gateway to the region.
