R R 'Boom' Powell, who flew 1,152 hours in the type, describes how changes in defence requirements led to the North American Aviation's Vigilante being adapted from its original role as a carrier-based nuclear bomber to that of reconnaissance, serving with distinction in Vietnam. Route reconnaissance was one of two missions which formed the majority of the Vigilante's combat flights. The other was pre- and post-strike photography. Taking the photographs before a major bombing raid was relatively easy. There was an element of surprise and the Vietnamese gunners would wait for the attack aircraft. It was getting the vital bomb damage assessment (BDA) photos that was hazardous: the smoke and dust from bombs took ten minutes to clear so the Vigilante would wait before coming back over the target. Ten minutes was also the length of time it took for the gunners to reload their weapons. The exact target was obvious and the sky would be filled with flak.
