One aspect of the air assault phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom which has so far received only limited attention has been validation of the operational utility of the Boeing/BAE Systems AV-8B Harrier Ⅱ and the United States Marines Corps' (USMC) short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) concept for fixed-wing aviation. Harrier IIs made up more than 40% of the 3rd Marine Air Wing's (3rd MAW's) fixed-wing offensive firepower, which helped pave the way for the rapid assault on Baghdad. Due to the integration of the Northrop Grumman AN/AAQ-28 (V) Litening Ⅱ targeting pod, Harrier IIs had an excellent capability to detect and attack tactical targets using precision laser guided bombs. In addition, the Harrier IIs flew from amphibious assault ships operating in the Arabian Gulf, which added TACAIR (tactical air) firepower since airfields in theatre were full or limited due to geographical and political aspects. For years many officials within the Department of Defense (DoD) have viewed the Harrier Ⅱ as an expensive investment with little to show in return. Though Operation Desert Storm proved the STOVL concept viable, it left many with concerns about the aircraft's survivability. However, one could argue that the success of the Harrier Ⅱ in Iraqi Freedom justified the USMC investment in this unique platform, even if the road to this success has been many years in the making.
