Designed initially for the Soviet Air Force, the An-72/74 family has undergone a number of transformations in attempts to satisfy the unpredictable military and commercial markets. There are approximately 190 An-74s and its An-72 (NATO reporting name Coaler) military predecessor presently in service in Russia, Ukraine, and at least ten other countries. Several new versions have recently entered production and the type looks set to continue giving sterling military and civil service for many years to come. This versatile short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft, nicknamed Tcheburashka (a popular Soviet cartoon character distinguished by big ears), traces its origins back to the early 1970s. Oleg Vasiliyevich Antonov, the founder of today's Antonov ATSC (Aviation Technical and Scientific Centre, formerly known as the Antonov Design Bureau) based in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, was the main driving force behind the development of a multi-role STOLjet transport to replace the turboprop An-26 Curl in military and civil service.
