Japan was the first customer for a military variant of the Boeing 767, placing an order for a 767-based Airborne Warning And Control System (AWACS) platform after the 707 production line closed in May 1991. Since that time, most Boeing militaryjetliner-based programmes have been modelled on the airframe of the Boeing 767. This is perhaps, unsurprising, as the 747 is too large and expensive for most applications (and production is tailing off anyway), while the 757 is out of production and its narrow body fuselage (like that of the 737) is now recognised as being too slender for most military applications.
