Multi-role is a commonly-used term in military aviation and usually refers to the varied capabilities of an aircraft. However, it also aptly describes 100 Squadron, based at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire flying 19BAE Systems Hawks T.1s and T.1As under the control of Strike Command. No two days flying schedule is the same on the unit and the taskings can range from simulating Russian-built fighter aircraft or flying trials with the Eurofighter Typhoon to towing a banner for air-to-air gunnery practice. With no war role the unit is totally 'customer'-focused and its raison d'etre is to provide fast jets to meet the requirements of other squadrons and agencies. The Hawk is an ideal aircraft for this, being far cheaper to operate than front-line types and also extremely manoeuvrable.
