The Scottish National Party (SNP) unveiled its defence plans in the White Paper Scotland's Future: Your Guide to an Independent Scotland on November 26 in advance of an independence referendum due on September 18, 2014. An annual budget of £2.5 billion would be allocated for defence and security missions by Scotland. The proposed Scottish Defence Force would comprise 15,000 regulars and 5,000 reservists by 2026, rising from 7,500 and 2,000 respectively in 2016. The SNP plans to keep Scotland within NATO, having dropped its long-standing policy of opposing membership in October 2012.
