Vice Admiral David Buss, commander US Naval Air Forces, stated that a decision on a new carrier onboard delivery (COD) aircraft was "about a year away". The COD acts as the transport link between aircraft carriers at sea and the shore. Vice Admiral Buss made the remark during West 2014 in San Diego, California, on February 12. The US Navy has been assessing a new production version of the Grumman C-2A Greyhound, which currently performs the role, and the Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey tiltrotor. The C-2 option would continue to benefit from commonality with the Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye used in the airborne early warning role; the two aircraft share many structures and components. It would also ensure continuity of service, as the older C-2s would be replaced by new aircraft that would not necessitate the complete retraining of pilots and maintenance crews. The Osprey's ability to land and take-off vertically would add greater flexibility to the COD fleet.
