India has a new start-up airline. Vistara is a joint venture between the Indian conglomerate the Tata Group and Singapore Airlines (SIA), and will initially fly five Airbus A320s leased from BOC Aviation. Vistara - the name is derived from the Sanskrit word vistaar, or 'limitless expanse' - is scheduled to receive its operating certificate from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India's aviation regulator, and start flying in mid-October. The airline will serve trunk routes to Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Jammu, Srinagar, Patna and Chandigarh from its New Delhi base and plans to expand its fleet to 20 aircraft within five years.
