Boeing YAL-1A OO-OOOl/'ED' (c 30201) will be mothballed after the US Department of Defense decided to cease work on the Airborne Laser Testbed (ALTB). The aircraft has been operated by the 417th Flight Test Squadron at Edwards AFB, California, but over the coming months both it and its directed energy weapon will be prepared for long-term storage. Around $5 billion has been spent on its development. The YAL-1A was procured by the US Air Force under the Airborne Laser (ABL) programme established in 1996, although in 2001 management of the project was transferred to the Missile Defense Agency (MDA).
