The United States Navy usually has two amphibious readiness groups (ARGs) deployed at any given time, one from the East Coast and one from the West Coast of the United States. This will change depending on the international situation and the number of available amphibious warships. Each ARG comprises a large, continuous-deck amphibious warfare ship carrying an air group: either a Tarawa-class LHA (landing helicopter assault ship) or a Wasp-class LHD (landing helicopter dock ship), or an LPD (landing platform dock ship) from either the Austin- or San Antonio-class, and an LSD (landing ship dock)belonging to either the Whidbey Island- or Harpers Ferry-class.
