Filipino President Benigno Aquino will request the purchase of a squadron's worth of Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Fighting Falcons during a visit to the United States due to take place in April 2012. President Aquino first revealed the planned request on December 11, 2011. A total of 24 early F-16C/Ds will be acquired via a Foreign Military Sale (FMS) as excess defense articles (EDAs) and modernised before entering service. The aircraft will be used to re-establish a fighter wing, the Philippine Air Force being without a fast jet unit since it retired its last Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighters in October 2005. The air force is seeking to acquire a new multi-role combat aircraft under its Capability Upgrade Programme, although it initially expected to begin procurement later this decade. The timescale has been moved forward to help counter Filipino concerns about China's ambitions in the South China Sea.
