The 9th Airlift Squadron, 512th Airlift Wing at Dover AFB, Delaware, has become the first all Lockheed Martin C-5M Super Galaxy unit in the US Air Force after recently flying its last C-5B sortie. Seven C-5Ms have been identified as being assigned to the unit. The final C-5B (86-0020) with the squadron arrived back at Dover AFB on March 12 from a mission to the Middle East. Water cannons from the base's fire brigade ceremoniously sprayed down the aircraft as it taxied back to its parking slot for shutdown. The aircraft is due to be upgraded as a C-5M. According Lt Col Dave Herbison, 9th AS Operations Director, the base "has the largest aerial port on the East Coast; it [makes] sense to put the most capable, strategic airlifter right next to it, so that we can move more cargo faster." The Super Galaxy benefits from more efficient engines, a variety of reliability-enhancing modifications and a glass cockpit, improving the range and payload capabilities as well as increasing serviceability.
