Switzerland has agreed to the details of its planned procurement of 22 Saab JAS39 Gripen E fighters from Sweden. The agreement, jointly announced by the two nations' defence ministries on August 25, involves the aircraft being procured as part of a production batch shared with the Swedish Air Force, to reduce per-unit costs. Contracts will be finalised between tats 2013 and mid-2014, as long as the Swiss Government gets a positive outcome from a referendum on the purchase. Three days after the announcement, the director of the Swedish defence export agency (FXM), Joakim Wallin, said that as both countries had opted to acquire single-seat Gripen Es, development of the two-seat F version would be abandoned.
