University of Michigan Survival Flight has started operations with its new Eurocopter EC155B1 helicopter, the first such operator in the US to do so. The first of three new aircraft entered service on August 10, replacing a trio of Bell 430s flown since 1998. The new helicopters will all be equipped with an emergency medical service (EMS) interior by Metro Aviation of Shreveport, Louisiana, which received a supplemental type certificate for the kit in December 2011. Metro Aviation designed the EMS package for the EC155B1 using a full-scale wooden mock-up of the cabin prior to receiving the initial aircraft for modification around September 2011.
