AIthough its official military designation is the Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100, the engine powering the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is to all intents and purposes a military version of the PW2040 commercial turbofan which has been powering the Boeing 757 reliably and efficiently for many years. Both engines offer 40,440lb (179.9kN) of thrust. The PW2000 series is notable not only as one of two engine options offered on the Boeing 757 while the aircraft was still in production (which ended in 2006; the other engine offered for the 757 was the Rolls-Royce RB.211-535). The PW2000 is also significant because in 1984 the original version, the PW2037, was the first commercial engine to be certificated with full authority digital engine control (FADEC) -which has featured in all subsequent engines in the series.
